  About this time, somewhere in Japan, a man planted the seed of a fig tree, watched it grow to a seedling, trimmed its tap root and started training the sapling as a bonsai. When he died he passed the young bonsai tree to his son. Twenty generations later that bonsai tree is flourishing and is on display at the Bonsai Museum in Marbella.

  As a self confessed bonsai addict I was left very disappointed by the museum. A lot of the trees looked very neglected, there were some nice pieces of what I would call raw material or Yamadori but very few high quality trees. The two members of staff were quite dismissive and had no intention of talking bonsai. They need to spend less time in the office and more time working the trees. There are no toilets on site and we were told to use the ones in the park, the gents were locked and the ladies were in a right state with no seats or loo roll. If you're in the area and looking to pass the time by all means pop in, if you're a bonsai enthusiast and are thinking of making the trip here, don't bother.

  The really old bonsais were super cool. The cascade of water and turtles also rocked. I guess I expected a bit more, for example a bit more space for every bonsai with maybe some big natural prints in the background or whatever. But overall awesome museum and good location

  Opened in 1992 this museum has a fantastic collection, the best in Europe, of bonsai from Japan, China and Taiwan together with a wild olive collection renowned worldwide, from Acebuche in Andalucia.

  The trees here are tiny and stuff. Thinking logical this must mean that all the birds here are really small to nest in them. The place is just little trees, it's no Blackpool.
